CWO WalkerChief Warrant Officer Don Walker was born at Alder Point, N.S. He joined the Royal Canadian Artillery in July 1967 and did his recruit and basic gunnery trades' training at the Royal Canadian Artillery Depot, Canadian Forces Base Shilo, Manitoba

On completion of his basic training, Gunner Walker was posted in March 1968 to the Second Regiment, Royal Canadian Horse Artillery at Canadian Forces Base Gagetown, N.B. Following conversion training in July 1969, to the 155-mm Self-Propelled M-109 Howitzer he was posted to ‘A’ Battery, 1st Regiment Royal Canadian Horse Artillery at Hemer, West Germany. He moved south with the First Regiment to Lahr in October 1970. Bombardier Walker repatriated to Canada in July 1974 to CFB Petawawa, Ont., where he served for three years with 427 Tactical Helicopter Squadron as an Air Observer.

In July 1977 on promotion to Sergeant, he returned to the 1st Regiment Royal Canadian Horse Artillery at Lahr, where he spent the next three years employed in the positions of Detachment Commander, Command Post Technician, and Observation Post Technician with ‘B’ Battery. In July 1980, he returned to the Royal Canadian School of Artillery at CFB Gagetown to attend the year long Assistant Instructor-in-Gunnery course, which he completed as the top candidate. Warrant Officer Walker remained at the School in the positions of Instructor and Training Resources Manager.

In July 1985, Master Warrant Officer Walker was posted to ‘J’ Battery, 3rd regiment Royal Canadian Horse Artillery at Canadian Forces Base Shilo as a Troop Sergeant Major. After a year, he moved to the Battery Sergeant Major position where he served for two years until July 1988 when he went back to Canadian Forces Base Gagetown to attend the year long Master Gunner Course.

On completion of the Master Gunner course in June 1989, Chief Warrant Officer Walker was posted to National Defence Headquarters in Ottawa. He spent the next three years in the Project Management Office, Low Level Air Defence, where he was employed as the Life Cycle Material Manager for the Air Defence Systems Equipment.

In June 1992, CWO Walker arrived at CFB Shilo to take up the duties and responsibilities of the Regimental Sergeant Major, RCA Battle School. Mr. Walker was appointed the RSM of the 1st Regiment Royal Canadian Horse Artillery on 20 October 1993. CWO Walker was appointed to the Order of Military Merit as a Member in 1995. In July 1996, he was appointed to the position of Home Station RSM RCA in CFB Shilo.

In June 1998, Mr Walker was appointed Brigade Sergeant Major of 2 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group at Canadian Forces Base Petawawa and in the summer of 2000, he was appointed as the Land Force Western Area Sergeant Major in Edmonton. He handed over the Area Appointment in Jun 2003 and deployed as the Force Sergeant Major with Task Force Bosnia Herzegovina from Sep 2003 to Apr 2004. Mr Walker retired from the Regular Force after 37 years of service on 20 July 2004. The next day Mr Walker transferred to the Reserve Force and was employed as the Land Force Western Area G3 Individual Training. In May 2006 Mr Walker transferred to 31 Canadian Brigade Group, Land Force Central Area and resides in Guelph Ontario. He is currently employed as the Operations Officer for 11 Field Regiment in Guelph. CWO Walker was appointed by the Chief of Land Staff as The Regimental Sergeant Major, Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery on 29 Jun 07. Mr Walker is married to the former Sandra Wallace of Guelph, ON.
