CWO Giroux was born in Courville, Que, on September 11, 1963. He enrolled in the Canadian Forces on January 28, 1981. On completion of his recruit training, he was posted to Q Battery of the 5e Régiment d’artillerie légère du Canada (5 RALC). In April 1982, he was posted to E Para Battery of 2nd Royal Canadian Horse Artillery (2 RCHA) in Petawawa, Ontario, where he served as a driver for the Ammunition Section, then as a gun number. He later was employed at selected positions within the Battery Command Post until he was promoted Master Bombardier in November 1984. He assumed numerous regimental responsabilities until September 1985 when he joined the 2 RCHA deployed in Cyprus under a United Nations mission. On his return, he was assistant detachment commander with the Para Battery. Upon promotion to Sergeant in December 1986, he became detachment commander, under the same battery.
In 1989, he was posted to W Battery with the Combat Training Centre in Gagetown, New Brunswick, where he was employed as detachment commander and Technical Warrant Officer. In September 1990, he underwent the training for Assistant Instructor in Gunnery. Upon graduation in May 1991, he was employed as an instructor, and later on as a course programmer at the Royal Canadian Artillery School. He was promoted to the rank of Warrant Officer in May 1993. In April 1994, he was employed as Quarter-Master Warrant Officer at the Royal Canadian Artillery School until February 1996. From February to July, he held the position of Standard Warrant Officer for the Basic Artillery Officer Course, phase IV.
In July 1996, he returned to 5 RALC and deployed with the Quick Reaction Force Battery as platoon second in command with the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Haïti. Upon return, he was Technical Warrant Officer for X Battery. During the ice storm in January and February 1998, he was deployed as X Battery Operations Warrant Officer, then as platoon second in command with OPERATION RÉCUPÉRATION, an aid of the civil power operation. As he returned, he resumed his position as Technical Warrant Officer until September 1999, and was then deployed with the 1R22R Battle Group as the Technical Warrant Officer for the Fire Support Coordination Centre during OPERATION PALLADIUM, roto 5. When he returned, he was posted with X Battery as gun line troop sergeant-major until July 2000. He was then appointed X Battery sergeant-major. In August, he was promoted to Master Warrant Officer.
In January 2002, he was assigned sergeant-major of the R Battery and joined his battery deployed with the BG 3R22R at OPERATION PALLADIUM, roto 9. In July 2002, he changed battery and was Headquarters and Services Battery sergeant-major until June 2003. He was then posted to 5 Area Support Group and employed as Valcartier Garrison sergeant-major. In September 2003, he was invested Member of the Order of Military Merit. Promoted to Chief Warrant Officer in February 2005, he was posted to Land Force Doctrine and Training System in the capacity of Command Standards Organisation Representative for Land Forces Quebec Area. He was appointed Regimental sergeant-major of The Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery School on July 11 2007.
CWO Giroux enjoys jogging, hiking and biking. He is married to Martine Desrosiers. They have a son, Alexandre.
