Colonel J.M. Petryk, CD

Col PetrykColonel Jim Petryk joined the CF under the auspices of the Regular Officer Training Plan in 1971, and received a Bachelor of Education (Physical Education) at the University of Alberta. On graduation he was commissioned in the Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery in May 1975.

Colonel Petryk has served tours in Canada, the United Kingdom, the Federal Republic of Germany, Hungary and Cyprus. He commanded a field artillery battery while on secondment to the British Army of the Rhine in the Federal Republic of Germany, and subsequently commanded First Regiment, Royal Canadian Horse Artillery (1RCHA) as part of Canada's NATO commitment there. On return to Canada Colonel Petryk commanded 26 Field Regiment, a Reserve Artillery unit. He has been employed in a training capacity as an Instructor in Gunnery (IG) and as a member of the Directing Staff at the Canadian Land Force Command and Staff College. As a Headquarters staff officer, he completed tours with the Special Service Force, FMC Headquarters and as a Base Chief of Staff at CFB Shilo. Prior to his appointment as Canadian Forces Attaché in Hungary Colonel Petryk was the Director of the Army Lessons Learned Centre. He has completed the Gunnery Staff Course (Locating) in the UK, attended both the Land Force Command and Staff College and the Canadian Forces College, and completed the Advanced Military Studies Course. He is a qualified parachutist.
