Lieutenant-Colonel Richard Garon was born in Sainte Anne des Monts, Gaspésie, in 1968. He joined the Canadian Forces and the Royal Military College Saint-Jean in 1987. Four years later, he obtained his Baccalaureate in military and strategic studies with a minor in military psychology.
He occupied various military positions as an artillery officer in the regular force and the reserve, in the country and abroad. He took part in a mission with the UN in Haiti in 1996 and with NATO in Bosnia Herzegovina in 2001-2002. He served notably at the Artillery School in Gagetown, at the 5e RALC in Valcartier, in various posts within the 57th and 59th Battery in Levis and Montmagny as staff officer of Land Force Quebec Headquarters in Montreal before being nominated as Commanding Officer of the 6th Field Artillery Regiment in 2004
He obtained a Master’s degree in Studies on the Behaviour of War in 1999. Since then, he is a part-time lecturer for the Royal Military College of Canada in Kingston and for Laval University where he is pursuing a doctorate in political science.
He has also been working for the last twelve years in other fields such as data-processing simulation with the company Calian, as well as private consultant in translation, history and tourism.
He is actively involved for the conservation of the military heritage in the area of Quebec through several committees and organizations, of which the Foundation of the memorial of the soldiers of Levis. He organized several activities in historical and military matter in the Quebec area and published the history of the 6th Field Artillery Regiment. .
He lives with his spouse Guylaine Gaudreau and his child Miriam.
