The 155mm medium gun was developed by the Armament Research and Development establishment in the late 1930's to meet a requirement for a five-inch gun to fire a projectile weighing 40.824 Kg (90 Lb) to a maximum range of 14,630 M (47,998 Ft). The gun entered production in 1941 and was first used in action in the middle east the following year. It served primarily with front-line units of the British Army until 1978 and was phased out of service in 1980.
