Lieutenant Colonel K.F. Haeck, CD

LCol HaeckBorn in Montreal on July 30, 1954, Lieutenant Colonel Haeck enrolled in the Canadian Forces in February 1975 under the Officer Candidate Training Plan as a member of the Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery. Like all other officer candidates at the time, LCol Haeck received his basic officer training at Canadian Forces Base Chilliwack. Shortly thereafter, he went to Canadian Forces Base Gagetown for his basic artillery officer training. He received his officer’s qualification in May 1976, was transferred to 2 RCHA Petawawa and then joined the Montreal Regiment in a security capacity during the 1976 Olympic Games. It was during this posting that he married Sylvia Cullen from Trois-Rivières, Quebec. A short while later, he was chosen to take the Gunnery Staff Course – Locating, offered at the Royal School of Artillery Larkhill in the United Kingdom. He remained in the United Kingdom from December 1979 to April 1981, and it was during this foreign posting that his wife, Sylvia, gave birth to their son Jason.

On his return to Canada in 1981, he was posted to the Artillery School at Canadian Forces Base Gagetown as Instructor Gunnery - Locating. During his first posting at the School, his wife gave birth to twins at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital in Fredericton. After two years as Instructor Gunnery - Locating, he became the Standards Officer. In 1984, he moved to 5 RALC where he held the positions of Battery Captain of X Battery and Regimental Operations Officer. Promoted to Major in 1986, he was appointed Battery Commander for Q Battery and was its commander during the Regiment’s engagement period in Cyprus during the 1987-88 United Nations mission. In the summer of 1988, he was chosen to attend the Canadian Forces Staff College in Toronto. At the end of his course in 1989, he was appointed to the Land Requirements Directorate at National Defence Headquarters (NDHQ). This posting, however, was short, as one year later he was appointed Artillery Officers Career Manager (1990-1003). In the summer of 1993, he was again transferred to the Artillery School as Chief Instructor Gunnery, a position he held until July 1995. That same summer, the family returned to Trois-Rivières, Quebec, as Lieutenant Colonel Haeck had been posted to UN headquarters in Zagreb, Croatia, where he took up the duties of Adviser to the Deputy Chief of Staff Operations. Six months later he exchanged his blue beret for a green one, having been appointed Command Operations Officer peripheral to the support provided to the NATO Peace Plan Implementation Force (IFOR).

Upon his return to Canada in 1996, he held the position of Coordinator to the Director Land Personnel Management/Director Artillery at NDHQ Land Staff. Promoted to his current rank in July 1997, Lieutenant Colonel Haeck was appointed Chief of Staff of the 33 Canadian Brigade Group in Ottawa.

Lieutenant Colonel Haeck was transferred to Canadian Forces Base Gagetown in July 1999 and appointed Commander of the Artillery School, a position he held until July 2002. Since July 2002, he has been serving as Chief of Staff of the Combat Training Centre. Lieutenant Colonel Haeck retired in April 2004 from the Regular Force and joined the Primary Reserve in September 2005 as the Commanding Officer of the 62e Régiment d’Artillerie de Campagne, ARC
