LCol Bishop was born in Woodstock N.B. His interest in the military began in 1977 when he joined the 318 Woodstock army cadet corps (RCA). He completed a variety of summer courses while a cadet culminating in attaining Master Cadet status and completing the basic parachute course. In Jan 81 he joined the 89th Battery, 3rd Field Regiment (RCA) and by August 83 he was a Sgt commanding a gun detachment. In Sept 83 he transferred to the regular force under the OCTP program and completed basic artillery officer training in Aug 84. Thereafter he was posted to E Bty (Para), 2 RCHA and completed jobs up to TC on his first regimental tour. In 88 he was posted to the Middle East where he was a military observer for one year. Following that deployment in 89 he was posted to the School of Artillery where he underwent the Instructor in Gunnery course and four years of instructional duty followed. In 94 he was returned to the 2nd Regiment as the RCPO and then the Ops O. In 97 he returned to the Artillery School as the Senior Instructor in Gunnery and then the Chief Instructor-in-Gunnery. In Jun 2000 he was appointed BC W battery at the school. In 02 he was posted to J3 International Operations in Ottawa where he was responsible for internationally deployed operations and in 05 was posted to LFWA and 1 CMBG as the G3 and subsequently the COS.
His Operational experience includes tours in Cyprus (85), Middle East (Syria and Lebanon (88/89)), Bosnia (00), and Afghanistan (most of 06) where he served as the Chief of Operations (CHOPS) for RC (S). In total he has spent almost 3 years deployed on operations.
He holds a BMAS from RMC that he completed entirely on his own time, and has completed IG, CFSC, CLSCSC, CFCSC (31). He is married to Jill Bishop (nee Hyland). Both enjoy most sports, but especially martial artists, triathlon and he is a long distance runner when he has time and it isn’t –40 degrees
