Regimental Major – Major R.G. Hart, CD

Major Hart grew up in Victoria, British Columbia. He joined the Canadian Forces in 1990 and studied at the University of Victoria. Commissioned as an officer in May 1992, he was then posted to the Field Artillery School and W Battery for the completion of Artillery Officer training.

Upon graduation from Phase IV, 2Lt Hart was posted to regimental duty with the 1st Regiment Royal Canadian Horse Artillery in Shilo, Manitoba.  From 1993 to 2003 he was fortunate to spend three years on the gun line, before a year as the Regimental Survey Officer.  In 1997, he was selected to deploy on Op PALLADIUM ROTO 1, as the Staff Officer to the Canadian Contingent Commander, Colonel Mike Capstick.  Upon return to 1 RCHA, Captain Hart was employed as a Forward Observation Officer for two years and in 2000, he became the Battery Captain of B Battery which then immediately prepared to deploy to Bosnia as part of the 2 PPCLI Battle Group.  Returning in 2001, Captain Hart was sent to Kingston, Ontario for the Canadian Land Forces Command and Staff College and then was appointed the Adjutant of 1 RCHA.

After 10 consecutive years in 1 RCHA Captain Hart was posted to CFB Edmonton for the year-long French Course and then was subsequently promoted and posted to the Land Staff at the Directorate of Army Doctrine in Kingston and later the Directorate of Land Concepts and Design.  He was the author of the SOPs in Land Operations, builder of the Battle Group and Brigade Headquarters, co-author of the Future Indirect Fire Capability and was one of the Army’s leaders in the area of Combat Identification. As well, in 2005 he deployed to Afghanistan and part of the inaugural Strategic Advisory Team as Chief of Staff. In 2008, Major Hart was selected as Battery Commander of W Battery at The Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery School in CFB Gagetown and subsequently returned to Shilo as the Regimental Major of The Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery in 2010.

Major Hart is married to Vicki they have four children: Jessica, Gordon, Laura and Olivia, along with 1 grandchild Isabella.
