MWO Cal Gibson comes from a rural farming background near Parry Sound Ontario. He was born 08 July 1959 the sixth child of a family of eight.   His basic training was conducted in Cornwallis, NS in the spring of 1979, followed by his posting to 2RCHA in Petawawa where after completing his Trade Qualification level 3 that summer, he joined D Bty.  In the next 6 years, most of his time was spent in the Forward Observation parties moving though the various jobs.  While acting as the 3rd Forward Observation Officer in D Bty he caught the CO’s (then LCol Beno) eye and joined his party as his “shooting tech”/signaller.  He was promoted Sgt in 1985 and posted back to D Bty and went to Cyprus that fall.  He was posted west for the first time to the RCA Battle School in Shilo from 1986 to 1989, instructing many courses and working as the school programmer and resources NCO.

In 1989 it was off to Lahr Germany and B Bty 1RCHA, working as a Detachment Commander 25A and Pronto until 1992 when 1RCHA was returned to Canada replacing 3RCHA in Shilo.  Still in B Bty he continued as Pronto, Detachment Commander, TSM, Recce Sgt and Battery Commanders Tech over the next 6 years.  From 1998 to 2000 he had a break from Regimental life, being posted to Range Control CFB Shilo, as a Range Patroller. The Germany Army Training Establishment was still actively in use, providing for busy fire fighting and liaison work.  Sgt Gibson deployed twice on operations in Bosnia during this time.  The summer and fall of 1993 he was the Command Post Officer for a mortar group in support of the LDSH Battle Group in Visoko.  He deployed again with the Mortars and the LDSH Battle Group in the winter of 1996, this time as a Mortar Group Commander in Coralici.  Sgt Gibson was heavily involved in the training of 3 operationally deployed Mortar Platoons out of 1RCHA Shilo from 1993 to 2001.

WO Gibson was posted back across the road on promotion to WO in 2000 to 1RCHA, C Bty, serving as TSM, Tech WO and BQMS until 2003. He had overseas 2 deployments cancelled before they launched in this short time.  He also completed his Assistant Instructor in Gunnery course during this time in preparation for a posting to the Field Artillery School.  Posted to CTC Gagetown, Field Artillery School (RCAS) in August 2003, he went to work writing the Artillery Mortar TP, Dismounted, Mounted and Technical Courseware.  He was also heavily involved in the transfer of all 81mm Mortar equipment from Infantry to Artillery sphere of influence.  As the resident Mortar SME he also played an important role in the development and testing of new drills and equipment for the 81mm Mortar.  In 2004 and 2005 he was the Course WO and programmer for two consecutive year long Instructor-In-Gunnery Crses and their associated BC Crses.

In 2006 he was posted back to Shilo as the Trg WO / TSM at LFWA TC Det Shilo.  He continued in that employ until his promotion to MWO in June 2008 and then was sent back across the street again to 1RCHA as BSM HQ & Svcs Bty. After 2 very high tempo years of supporting Foreign and Domestic operations and also nursing Artillery Transformation into the 1RCHA mainstream, he has handed off the BSM appointment for a new position.  MWO Cal Gibson assumed his new duties at the Home Station as the RCA HQ Sergeant Major on 6 July 2010.

He has two adult boys living in the Shilo MB area.  He remarried in Dec of 2008 and lives in Brandon with his wife and 2 stepdaughters.
