Director of Artillery Colonel L. C. Dalton, CD
Colonel L.C. Dalton assumed the duties of Director of Artillery on Saturday 18 Feburary 2012.
Colonel Craig Dalton was commissioned into the Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery in August 1990 and commenced service with the 2nd Regiment at CFB Petawawa. His initial regimental tour included service with D Battery and E
Battery (Para) and included a United Nations deployment to Cyprus on Operation SNOWGOOSE 59. Posted to the Field Artillery School in 1994, Col Dalton completed the year-long Instructor-in-Gunnery Course (Field) and served as an Instructor-in-Gunnery until December 1995.
Col Dalton returned to the 2nd Regiment in January 1996, in the capacity of Regimental Command Post Officer a position he held until the summer of 1999. During this period, he deployed to Bosnia-Herzegovina with 3rd Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment where he served as the Senior Liaison Officer and, upon the Battalion’s redeployment, remained in theatre joining the staff of Multi-national Division (SW) HQ as a planner. On return to Canada Col Dalton was posted to Kingston where he attended RMC and subsequently served as a staff officer in Land Force Doctrine and Training System HQ.
Selected to command C Battery, Col Dalton joined the 1st Regiment Royal Canadian Horse Artillery in 2002. Upon relinquishing command in 2004, Col Dalton proceeded to Fort Leavenworth Kansas to attend the United States Army Command and General Staff College and subsequently the United States Army School of Advanced Military Studies (SAMS).
Upon graduation from SAMS in 2006, Col Dalton returned to Canada and joined the International Plans Directorate on the Strategic Joint Staff where he served until selected to command the 2nd Regiment Royal Canadian Horse Artillery. Col Dalton commanded the 2nd Regiment from 2007 to 2009 when he was appointed Commanding Officer (Designate) of the Kandahar Provincial Reconstruction Team (KPRT). He deployed to Afghanistan and commanded the KPRT through its transition to a civilian-led organization at which time, he assumed the duties of Chief of Staff Task Force Kandahar.
In 2011, Col Dalton was posted to Canberra Australia to attend the Defence and Strategic Studies Course at the Australian Defence College. Upon completion, Col Dalton returned to Canada and assumed the position of Chief of Staff Land Force Doctrine and Training System.
Col Dalton is a graduate of the Canadian Land Force Command and Staff College, the United States Army Command and General Staff College, and the United States Army School of Advanced Military Studies. He holds a BMASc from the Royal Military College of Canada, a Master of Science in Administration from Central Michigan University, a Master of Military Arts and Science from the United States Army School of Advanced Military Studies and a Master of Arts in Strategy from Deakin University Australia.
