The Royal Canadian Artillery Band, Commanding Officer / Director of Music – Captain Gagnon
Captain Gagnon joined the Canadian Forces in 1988 after graduating from the Quebec Conservatory of Music. Upon completion of his military basic training he was posted to the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry Band in Calgary as a French horn player. His numerous posting include the Royal Canadian Artillery Band, The Central Band of the Canadian Forces, and the Band of the Ceremonial Guard.
Upon being commissioned to the rank of Lieutenant in 2006, Captain Gagnon spent a year completing his staff training at the Directorate – History and Heritage – Music. He developed his conducting skills by studying with Dr. Dale Lonis (Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra) and Dr. Linklater (University of Manitoba) at the Canadian Wind Conductors Development Program, and by participating in master classes under the direction of Dr. Paula Holcomb (SUNY Fredonia) and Rodney Winther (director of Wind Studies and Professor of Music at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music). Captain Gagnon remained active as a French horn player in the Ottawa music community where he was a regular member of the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra and the Gatineau Symphony Orchestra.
As a Lieutenant, he was appointed Director of Music for the Band of the Ceremonial Guard in March 2008 where he spent two summers. He was promoted to his current rank and appointed Deputy Commanding Officer / Associate Director of Music of The Central Band of the Canadian Forces in November 2009. He was posted back to the RCA Band in Edmonton, and appointed Commanding Officer, on June 23rd 2010.
